The past few weeks for many have been a case of juggling work – however this currently might look for each of us, and family commitments of some description. Each day is a battle to literally starve off the temptations of higher than usual carb and sugar intake all the while consuming the umpteenth coffee of the day – all in self-isolation! What about the exercise?
This week, we reached out to good friend and personal trainer Chris Scott, www.chrisscottpt.co.nz, to get some insights on how to get your own fitness regime underway at home and the benefits of these during this time of self-isolation. Chris has been a personal trainer for 20 years and currently conducts his personal training business at Anytime Fitness on Wyndham Street in the Auckland CBD.
‘Importantly, it’s about having purpose and to be productive outside of your professional commitments while in lock down”. The benefits of exercise are twofold – to not only your body but to your mind as well”
“During this time it’s more important than ever to ensure you are looking after yourself. You should be going for regular walks or runs and if possible undertaking a body-weight style strength workout will ensure you feel the full benefits of exercise”.
“With winter now also approaching, you will need a strong immune system and those undertaking regular exercise and eating a well-balanced diet are going to be in a better position to resist the serious effects of what winter brings and importantly the Covid virus ”. Of course we can’t not talk about exercise without talking about its benefits to Mental Health. “It’s incredibly important on a daily basis to remove yourself from your work or maybe a house full of family and do something for yourself. Exercise is known to release the natural endorphins (feel good hormones) that make us feel better and suppress the signs of stress, which during this time will understandably be elevated”.
“The results can show themselves, both physically and mentally pretty quickly once you can get a consistent program underway. Its all part of making positive life changes and who doesn’t want that?”
